Down Not Out
Words and Music by Amity Dry
This song came in a moment of total frustration, which funnily enough, is not usually a good place to write songs from but it seems to have worked in this case! I have always been very determined and focused in my life but this song came about during a time when I was up against some real obstacles and battles, which tested even the strongest part of me. It is always easy to say 'Don't give up' but it's not until you really feel like you've been beaten that you can test what you're made of and I found that the harder things got the more determined I became to beat the odds. When I wrote the song it made me feel so much stronger, and then every time I had a weak moment I would sing it to pump me up again. Because of that this song is very personal and close to me, but I know there will be so many people that relate to it and I hope it gives them strength in the times they need it. Every time I hear the last part, with the lines 'I won't give up and I won't give in' I feel so inspired I could just about run a marathon. Or…maybe not!
Forty dollars in the bank
More bills come every day
I can't pick up the phone now
They're all looking to be paid
Money had no value
Til everything was gone
Now all is lost on paper
But I'm still holding on
I may be down
I might be low on my luck
But it's coming round
And I do my best
When my backs against the wall
And I might stumble, but I never fall
I may be down, but I'm not out
Lost the only job I've known
It's nothing I can change
So I just sleep til bedtime
Can't find a reason for each day
Back when I was working
I did nothing but complain
Now I would give anything
To see those days again
Chorus
I might be battered
But I'm not broken yet
It might be harder
But this is not the end
Chorus
